It is important to have a charter for your project because this is the document that formally authorizes the project and provides for documenting and tracking information required by decision makers to approve the project for funding. It should include a preliminary delineation of roles and responsibilities and define the authority of the project manager. The purpose of the charter is to document the reasons for undertaking the project; objectives and constraints of the project; directions concerning the solution and it should also identify the major stakeholders. It can serve as the primary sales document for the project allowing stakeholders to have an easily accessible and concise summary they can distribute and keep handy and use as a reference.
